Add Acid: What You Need to Know About Azelaic Acid

Benefits of Azelaic Acid by The Luxe Particle

Add acid, sound familiar? If you’ve ever taken a chemistry class, you will know that you always “add acid” to water to minimize the chance of creating a highly-concentrated acid mixture capable of producing boiling heat that can splash acid everywhere. Well, we’re here to give you a slightly different take on acid, that is azelaic acid.

The Azelaic

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid that is found in grains, such as barley, wheat, and rye. It is also produced by certain bacteria on the skin. Azelaic acid is used for its many skincare benefits and is generally safe for use with all skin types. Those with blemished or sensitive skin may also find azelaic acid to be a hero ingredient in their skincare routine.

Here are some of the reasons why azelaic acid is good for the skin:

Reduces hyperpigmentation: Azelaic acid has been shown to be effective in reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, including dark spots and melasma. It works by inhibiting the production of melanin, which is the pigment that gives color to the skin.

Treats acne: Azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce inflammation and redness in the skin. It also has antibacterial properties, which can help to kill the bacteria that cause acne.

Improves skin texture: Azelaic acid can help to improve skin texture by promoting cell turnover and exfoliation. This can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and leave the skin looking smoother and more radiant.

Regulates sebum production: Azelaic acid can help to regulate sebum production in the skin, which can be beneficial for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Anti-aging benefits: Azelaic acid has antioxidant properties, which can help to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. This can help to reduce the signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

The Play-by-Play

Azelaic acid is not only a versatile and effective ingredient that can improve the health and appearance of the skin, but it plays nicely with other ingredients and formulations without impacting their efficacy.

Specifically, azelaic acid can be used as part of your regular skincare routine after cleansing, toning, and exfoliating. It can be mixed in with your favorite serum, moisturizer, or SPF, and can also be used as a targeted spot treatment for hyperpigmentation or acne.

Used in lower concentrations of about 10%, azelaic acid can be highly beneficial when paired with other powerhouse ingredients such as glycolic acid and lactic acid (AHAs) or salicylic acid (BHA), and vitamin C. These formulations not only help with smoothing skin texture and balancing its tone, but also with a deeper, more effective exfoliation to clear up any congestion.
