Squalane vs Squalene: Choose Wisely & Get the Right Benefits

Squalane vs Squalene: Choose Wisely & Get the Right Benefits

To be honest, I wasn’t even aware that these were two different things until I saw a few of my favorite brands talking about it on social media. I’ve always loved squalane, because it’s a simple oil that has endless uses and is a safe addition to anyone’s skincare routine.

Here’s a quick guide on what differentiates squalane from squalene, what the benefits are, and how to incorporate it into your regimen.

  • Squalene is a lipid naturally produced in human skin cells and is found in sebum. After age 30, squalene production decreases which can lead to dry skin. It can also be derived from natural plant sources such as olives and sugarcane.
  • Sadly, squalene can also be derived from animal sources such as sharks from a harmful and barbaric practice referred to as “shark livering”. Sharks are hunted for the high concentrations of squalene found in their livers (i.e. shark liver oil). Squalane sourced from animals comprises 90% of beauty products.
  • Squalane is the shelf-stable form of squalene, which undergoes a process called hydrogenation. This is important as, without refinement, squalene can quickly oxidize and become rancid, making it potentially harmful for skincare. Squalane is an odorless and colorless oil, that is easily mixed into skincare and has higher efficacy.
  • Squalane is an emollient with a non-greasy texture, making it a safe and effective ingredient for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It won’t clog pores and can be beneficial for acne-prone skin.
  • Additional benefits include anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, UV protection, and potentially boosting collagen production.
  • It’s critical that we, as advocates of the green beauty community, stay informed of how ingredients are sourced, to ensure skincare products contain ethically sourced squalane. Look for a “100% plant-derived”, or “Certified Vegan” label to guarantee that the brand does not engage in inhumane or deceitful practices that source ingredients from animals.

How to use Squalane

As a multi-purpose oil, the uses for squalane are endless! Check out a few simple ways to add this beautiful oil to your everyday routine.

  • Warm a couple of drops of oil in the palm of your hands and pat on your face, and let it absorb into the skin before applying your regular moisturizer for extra hydration.
  • Mix a few drops into your tinted moisturizer or foundation for a little extra glow!
  • Squalane is a great targeted solution for dry skin under the eyes, chapped lips, and cuticles.
  • Use it as a full-body moisturizer after your shower, or add a few drops to your favorite body lotion for rich, non-greasy hydration.
  • Add a few drops to the ends of hair to lock in moisture, or near the roots to tame frizz.
